In this lesson, we use the characteristics that describe a country or a city depending on its geographic characteristics.

Here you are some characteristics:



















The indefinite articles: A vs. An

USE 1

The article A is used before singular, countable nouns which begin with consonant sounds.
Examples:
  • He is a teacher.
  • It is a flat country
  • There is a large desert called the Sahara desert.

USE 2

The article AN is used before singular, countable nouns which begin with vowel sounds.
Examples:
  • He is an actor.
  • Egypt is an African country.
  • An economic activity in Egypt is tourism.

USE 3

Remember that A(AN) means "one" or "a single". You cannot use A(AN) with plural nouns (
).
Examples:
  • An American countries. Not Correct
  • American countries. Correct
  • A flat cities. Not Correct
  • Flat cities. Correct
